Grand Knight Report
Hello Brother Knights. I take this time to hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas. Mine was nice. As we ended the 2009 year there was much work being done. Everyone was doing things to get the Senior Christmas Dinner completed. That was our last activity for 2009. As we enter 2010 there will be more things to work on and get done. I take this time to thank everyone who was involved with the Senior Dinner. So many people gave up their time to see it run right. We thank you all. Now back to 2010. We start the year off and running just like we ended it, with a January 3rd Pancake Breakfast, January 8th fish fry, also January 22nd is our second fish fry for the month; two days later is the K of C Free Throw Contest. So you see we end the year running and begin the year running just as fast. In case everyone doesn’t know, we continue to place tied for Second in the whole State of Ohio in program points. I am proud of this. Only council in Toledo area. Good work to all involved. Also more good news for our council, we have placed two winners from the Football Frenzy. Mr. Kenny Kregg won money, and my son Shawn also won money. This is good for our council. I hope more people win. Congratulations to our District Deputy Charles Bakle Jr. on his retiring from ODOT after many years of service. Good work Charles and best wishes from all your Brother Knights.

William Ware

Fish Fry
Time to get back at it, but due to the holiday we moved to the SECOND and FOURTH Fridays just for January. We are always looking for people who haven’t been involved with the fish fry who want to give us a hand. We have great fish, lots of side dishes to eat, even macaroni & cheese and hot dogs for the kids. Come on out!
January Generations of Faith – We Are CALLED TO PRAY
In October, Generations of Faith explored images of God the Father and the importance of believing in the one true God rather than a false image of God. November's session helped us to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and our commitment to being his disciple in daily life. What's Next? We Are CALLED TO PRAY, to foster a relationship with Jesus and with the invisible God whom he reveals. The Generations of Faith gatherings on January 10 and 13 aim to help us:
• Experience prayer as a vital and personal relationship with the living God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit
• Value the role of prayer in living the Catholic faith and in ongoing conversion
• Practice prayer as part of the discipline of discipleship.
The disciples came to know Jesus through conversation with him and being in his presence, through listening to his teachings and watching him constantly. In the Catholic tradition, rich paths of prayer enable us to spend time with Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit. We choose to pray using words memorized in youth or taken from the Scriptures, with cries from the heart or with no words at all. We attempt to create a more prayerful environment, both outside and inside us, knowing that – in the end – prayer is more something God does in and for us than something we do for God. On Sunday January 10 (12:45 - 2:45) or Wednesday January 13 (6:30 - 8:30), come to St. John Catholic Church in Defiance to participate in intergenerational, lifelong faith formation. Mrs. Patricia Oedy-Murray, professor at Lourdes College and Mercy College, will share the Catholic tradition of lectio divina: praying with the scriptures.
Pancake Breakfasts
The next one is scheduled for January 3, the first Sunday of the month. Schedules have been distributed, and Team 1 is on duty this month. Team 2 is up for February 7. If you aren’t yet on a team but can help, just report to the kitchen and we will put you to work. From 9:00 to 11:30 we will be serving pancakes, baked hash brown potatoes, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage links, cinnamon rolls, milk, juice and coffee. Did you know there’s two pounds of sugar in the icing on every pan of those rolls? This is open to everyone, so please tell your friends and neighbors about it and plan to attend. Free Will Donation!
Free Throw Contest
All area youth age 10 to 14 are invited to take their turn at the free throw line on Sunday January 24. Shooting will begin at 1:00 pm and registration forms will be available at school, or pick one up at the fish fry in January, or fill one out the day of the event. Please bring your birth certificate. Winners move on to the District level competition. We have prizes for the winners in each age category and everybody gets a certificate. Please help with publicity. Start practicing!
Senior Christmas Dinner
Sunday December 20 we had about 200 guests at the hall for dinner, and we delivered about 150 meals to homes and nursing homes. Everyone had a great time. We really appreciate the Youth from St. Isidore who waited tables and then sang carols for our guests. It takes a lot of people to put this dinner together, with all the associated planning, preparation, and cooking but it is one of our more popular events. Lots of people look forward to this dinner, and it gives everyone who participates a wonderful sense of accomplishment. There were over 75 Knights, Ladies and friends there Sunday to handle registration, seating, serving, delivery, clean up and all the other details. Thanks to all those individuals and businesses who donated money and supplies, and thanks to everyone who made 2009’s dinner the latest in our long string of successful Senior Christmas Dinners.
Card Parties
Come to the Members Room at 1:30 p.m. the first Monday of the month and play some cards. Everyone is welcome; you don’t even need to bring a partner. Free refreshments. The games continue monthly through May.
Membership Dues
Statements are going out, and it’s time to pay your 2010 dues please. If you wish to Gimme Five, it will help cover all administrative costs of the Measure Up campaign. We have also been assessed $2 per member (not Honorary Life) for the Culture of Life fund Supreme started last year. If you wish to participate, add $2 for that. And if you want to be among the first to get your 2010 Charity Campaign Tickets, complete the insert and return it to Terry. If you had a balance left from previous years, your statement will reflect the total amount to get caught up through 2010. If you have any questions about your dues, call Terry. If you want to pay Lifetime Council 1039 Dues, it’s $100 if you are 60; $200 if you are $50; $300 if you are 40, and so on.

PRO-LIFE March in Defiance
A Pro-Life March against the Roe vs Wade abortion decision is being sponsored by Mother Teresa Respect for Life on Friday January 22. The day’s activities begin with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by Father Tim Kummerer at St Mary's in Defiance at 8:00 a.m. Following Mass, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the day for the intentions of mothers, babies, all involved in abortions, post abortion parents, pro lifers and those who will be attending marches throughout the nation, ending with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
The March itself will begin at 12:00 noon at the Defiance County Courthouse. A police escort will lead the March, ending at the Monument for the Unborn near St John's Catholic Church. Speakers will be Father Steve Stanberry who will speak about the history of American society redefining other humans as not human, Patty Meriwether speaking about the Community Pregnancy Center, Pastor Larry Grow speaking on appeals to reason and adoption, Deacon Nick Varano speaking on how people treat each other with pro life and pro choice, Jan Kahle speaking on the dignity of the human being, and Judy Snyder speaking on the handicapped with the womb. Rick Small will be the host of the march. Please join us in giving public witness to the sacredness of life in the womb and to be a voice for those whose voices have been silenced. If you have any questions, call Deb Snyder at 782-7778.
